Elvis Presley Remembered forever

  ·

Ms. McComb was from Tupelo Mississippi, she had befriended the Presley’s many years before stardom happened for Elvis. One day in late 1971 she was visiting with Elvis at Graceland Lisa was pushing her baby buggy through the hall, and I said to Elvis, ‘Can you imagine? She is soon going to be four years old. What are you going to give her for her birthday?’ Elvis paused and said ‘I don’t know – she’s all we have – she is our most prized possession. I want Lisa to know what the important things in life are. Money is not important – it is fleeting and all this is just vanity’. He said ‘A lot has happened through the years.

Do you remember, when we left Tupelo, all we had was a little trunk on top of the car’. We talked and laughed for an hour or more reminiscing about his childhood, about his mother cooking, about how his grandmother wore an apron, and about the song Precious Memories, which was sung at his mother’s funeral. He said ‘Those early values that my parents taught me are still my values, and I want my child to know them’.

Mrs. McComb’, Elvis said, (he always addressed me as ‘Mrs. McComb’ when he was talking to me, but always autographed things to me as ‘Janelle’.) ‘do you think you could take your pen and write something for me to give my little girl to tell her what the real values of life are, because I may not always be around’.

‘In other words’, I said, You want to give her ‘the priceless gift’.

He said ‘That’s right, and be sure to sign it ‘Daddy’.

I said ‘Well, Elvis, I’ll try’.

I went home and wrote the poem. When I brought it back to Elvis at Graceland, he was so touched and pleased when he read it, he ran up the stairs two at a time to hide it until Lisa’s birthday. When he came back down crying, I asked him to sign my copy of the poem. He signed it, then with his elbow attempted to wipe the tears off the paper and smeared his signature. He said ‘Oh, Mrs. McComb, I’ve ruined your copy’.

‘No’, I said, ‘someday those teardrops will be just as priceless as this poem is to you’.

Birthdays are always special

as your fourth one comes to you

and I wondered what I’d give you

Just anything wouldn’t do.

I thought of childish treasures

to hang upon your wall

Yet nothing seemed appropriate

or none I could recall.

Money seemed so cold and fleeting

Bought treasures go so fast

And I wanted a gift to please you

And one that would also last.

You know you’re sort of special

You are really all we’ve got

You’re Mama’s bit of heaven

And Daddy’s tiny tot.

I closed my eyes – the years rolled by

And I slowly found my way

To a shadowed corner in the attic

T’was a link to my yesterday.

I raised the lid to a frayed old trunk

And there a priceless treasure lay

A tattered apron with strings still tied

And I knew I heard her say –

‘Son, I’m now just a precious memory

But don’t ever forget one thing

I always tried to guide your life

With these worn out apron strings.

They guided a man named Lincoln

As he steered the ship of State

It’s the only gift I gave you

That will never go out of date.

Apron strings changed the course of

History as great men felt their tug

They followed sons onto battle fields

Without the slightest shrug.

They guided both kings and beggars

Through harmony and strife

Son, you surely must have felt their tug

For how God has blessed your life.

I bowed my head and said a prayer

For I knew God had surely touched

A tattered old trunk so tucked away

And an apron that had meant so much’.

So Lisa, I give you the ‘Priceless Gift’

That surpasses all other things

A whole lifetime of love for you

She tied in her apron strings.

Daddy

CLOUDY AS IN TSUNAMI

The clouds in the distant

Are grayish with a deep

Gray accenting the top

They could be mistaken

For a tsunami and if that

Were the case I would

Have about ten minutes

More to live. I wonder

What I would do with

That time. No need to

Preserve anything as

Everything will be destroyed

I try to think of something

Important, other than prayer,

To fill that short span of time

I think quickly of all that

Went into being here with

All the things I have gathered

I would like to thank all who

Helped me along the way

But they if still alive will have

To assume that thanks were

Given as there will be no

Evidence. This may be the

Last muse I write

I have no animals to comfort

although when I lived

In the country I had numerous

Cats and dogs. I still have a

Few minutes left and I wonder

What I can do for others

I do not believe in a me, me world

I have always thought that we

Should think of others first

Now it is first, last, and always

There are no barriers and the

Ice mountains forming are too

Low to be effective in warding

Off even a small wave so I guess

That this is it.

WHEN ITS COLD

In Alaska, you will see no goose

Swimming on open waters

Because the temperature is a

Minus 32 degrees and

Everything is frozen solid

The moose are having trouble

Traversing through the snow

So they travel the railroad tracks

The trains have to slow down

To avoid serious moose-train wrecks

Eventually, the moose skitter off

The tracks until the train passes

Then they resume the easier trail

To capture this on film would be

A wonder but it has been done

It is incredible to see but in

In times of need, everything is

Possible and life goes on.  We

Must praise God for instinct or

We would never survive. Today

It is 25 degrees in the Upper

Peninsula of Michigan and the

Sun is so bright with the reflections

Of the lake that it is blinding

And you have to block it out

In order to see. A tale of two northern

Locations that are both cold

But in this case 60 degrees apart

I like the U.P. but the sun is

Maddening when you are trying

To write. Later, of course, we will be

Wishing for more.

A SMALL BIRD

It is a cold December day as I watch a small bird

flittering through the branches of a red pine tree.

It is no doubt searching for food. It is such

a small creature that can move about faster

than we could if we had no obstacles in our way.

The tree is a natural habitat for it and it does

not appear to fear predators. Its instinct is to survive.

We have that same instinct, but along with it

comes the command to watch out for and

take care of those in need and do this without

question much like the Good Samaritan.

This kind of help is not commonplace but

those who involve themselves in it are

happy people filled with joy, the quiet joy

knowing we did well, but not waving a flag

to impress others. The greatest love is from

one who lays down his life for others.

Suddenly he is gone and we feel empty

because we lost one who was so fulfilling.

Giving of ourselves is the only thing that

makes us truly happy, but it is a difficult

lesson to learn. To motivate others is not easy

because most people are looking out for themselves

just like the small bird in the pine tree.

We should never give up and continue

to find new ways to accomplish our goals.

Our world needs more giving and less taking.

It is time to step up and do the right things.

WE WATCH AND WAIT

We watch from the sidelines

The happy little skaters

Then get upset when

We think of dictators

They have their ways

With soldiers on patrol

Would do anything to

Keep themselves in control

We pray to our savior

For angels He could send

And bring this foolishness

Crashing to a sudden end

Then we will wait by

Our snowy windows

Watching carefully

Which way the wind blows

We will watch the skaters

Wearing their hockey gear

Get back on the ice and skate

Showing absolutely no fear

They won’t know that

Problems have been solved

There is no need for

Them to be involved

We thank the angels

Give praise to the lord

Happy that prayer is

Mightier than the sword

THE STORM IS OVER

There was panic, but there always is

when there is a call for bad weather.

It came, left its mark, and ended. There

Was glee and joy. Still care was needed

On the roads, which were still icy. People

Were speaking of end times and rapture

But basically, they quieted down and looked

To see how much work was done and how

Much more to do. Christmas was a little over

A week away and commercial things waited,

Although the birthday of Christ was not

Forgotten, but put on a back shelf, more or

Less. The woke crowd was trying to shut down

The religious side of Christmas, where the

Focus should really be. Instead, the advertising

Side was pushing everything they could so that

Everyone would be pleased on the 25th. It is a sad

Commentary on us as a people, but that is the way

It is. We will endure, reflect, and possibly change as

We go forward, but no one is holding their breath.

SIERRA MOUNTAINS

I have never been to California so

I have to depend on pictures and

people telling me about how beautiful it is.

My daughter and Grandson live near

the mountains and often drive an hour

to walk through them. The Sequoias are

huge and one has been tunneled so you

could drive a car through it. There are

fires in the state almost every year and

the shortage of water has been spoken of.

A lot of good water is allowed to flow into

the ocean in to save a species of fish.

The Sierra Club is behind a lot of these

seemingly good things, but in reality,

have caused more harm than good.

A good forest maintenance and

reforestation plan would be beneficial,

but there never seems to be enough

money, because the money is used

to develop green energy. There are

blackouts in the hot weather because

of the need for air-conditioning.

They plan to discontinue fossil fuels

in a few years. We will see how that works.

Illegal immigrants are welcome in California.

They receive government handouts.

This at the same time that some of our

veterans are sleeping on the sidewalk.

It is hard to understand, but time will tell.

Lawn and yard maintenance is the work

of my Grandson. He is very diligent and

does things the correct way. People like

him and are eager to see him each week.

He rides a mountain bike over trails meant

for riding and at times flies through the air

and lands on a hill. He loves doing this,

but I think it is a dangerous sport and

if he hurts himself, how can he do his job.

He knows all of this. I wish they would

come to Michigan and live near us.

They like mountains and we have plains

and water. We wait and pray.

BLIZZARD LIKE WEATHER

Snow peppered down in an unceasing wind.

No weather for the weak. The infirmed are

glad they don’t have to go out, nor give an

explanation. It is what it is and as strong as

the storm is it is nothing like the storms in

the south where houses are without roofs

and death is a common thing. One can only

hope to survive

We feel for them and offer prayer. No need to

caution them as they know more than we.

Government solutions are not for the poor.

They usually suffer more when dams are

opened or levies break. We will have

slushy roads and later freezing rain

may enter the picture. You cannot see

or hear the birds. They, no doubt,

have a store of food for these conditions.

Animals are insulated with winter fur. The

follicles on deer are hollow and this keeps

them warm even if they plunge into

the icy water. The sky is a lighter gray than

the water and the only white you see is the

snow and the caps on the waves. It is exciting

in a way, but hard to enjoy when you know

others are suffering and cannot get out.

Many are hungry and without food. Some

have lost electricity and have no phone service.

They somehow endure and when this is over

they will be stronger and work hard to be

prepared for the next disaster. The strong

will be weaker as they feel they are in control,

but seem helpless when it is their turn to face

adversity. We are in wonder as we do not

understand the hand of God and nature. We

learn to accept and to be thankful for the

goodness we know.

THE CALM WIND TURNED

The wind which was quietly whispering

suddenly turned into a gale force.

Trees were bending and swaying.

There was fear that one would crack and fall.

It happens and it is not a pretty sight.

People go through hurricanes and tornadoes.

Their lives change for a while and never do

restore to the peace they once knew.

In the east dark clouds are blocking the sun.

Tis the season to be jolly, but no one

is going around with smiles.

Everyone has something on their mind

which makes them forget about safety.

In town the bell ringers for the Salvation Army

are loyally standing at their posts and

not surprisingly folks are donating

change and folding money.

There are warm smiles as people forget

about the wind and think of their fellow man.

This is what makes for a great country.

We are here, we see, and we help.

Later, many will be happy as they

will be served by others generosity.

In less than two weeks we shall celebrate

the birth of our creator. We think of

Joseph and Mary on a donkey riding to

Bethlehem for the census. Could they make it

through this wind. They did, presuming that

there was wind, but arrived late and there was

no room in the inns and no good Samaritan to

take care of them. We will have street people

crowding and sleeping in doorways. Some are

addicted to drugs, subject to depression and do

not care what happens to them. Our

government has no answers and if money is

involved, there will be graft. We must pray to

the savior who will soon be here for guidance

and hopefully solve this and other problems.

Meanwhile the waves strongly roll in and

the wind continues to blow.
