YOU WONDER QUIETLY

When the imagination

Takes over the truth

You find yourself in

A balancing act

Make up will

Overcome stage fright

The applause you hear

Will be for you and

Shared gallantly

With your fellow thespians

The world is waiting

Wondering what took so long

Adrenalized euphoria takes hold

You are the talk of the town

Fly you to the moon and

Let you play among the stars

Enlighten them and return

Tickertape parades in open cars

Bodyguards and henchmen

Interviews with the press

Wardrobe executives

Now the family is in the way

What should you do with relatives?

Dreamland is fun

Too bad it’s not real, but

Reality can be cold and harsh

Having little or no appeal

Everything encountered

Will have ups and downs

From political leaders to

The circus clowns

Find peace and joy in what you do

The safest way to go

Hopes and dreams disappear

You wonder quietly, why the fear

THE EMPTY CHAIR

One looks around

Searches for a face

Comes up empty, sorrowfully

That one prays for grace

Lifts eyes upward to heaven

Asks God – please God

That chair that’s empty

Please give us a happy reason

Sometimes there is one

But more times the answer is sad

Why did it happen, Lord

How did we lose this hero?

There is more than one empty chair

Heroes are lost many without care

Police are killed – sometimes with cheer

Families losing their providers is not fair

We her the call –

Defund the Police

Reimagine our protection

A few rotten apples

Hysterical results

We witnessed the peaceful demonstrations

And watch the crime rates soar

Our heroes bludgeoned to death

Giving us another empty chair

The open border flooded with people

Coming from who knows where

Committing terror, human traffic and murder

Leaving us too many empty chairs

WAITING FOR THE MOMENT

Looking out at the inland sea I blink

And then close my eyes against the

Brightness.  I pray and thank God

For another miracle.  He has given

To me a moment in time and I do

Not waste it, but think of those,

Coming to mind, who have impacted

My life in one way or another

There are many, many of whom have

Left us, but the view of the faces I

Have in my mind is awesome.  Have

I been an influence, giving examples

Of how to live to others?  My mind

Races and the faces keep coming

A minute in a miracle is like eternity

In the mind, but in real life it is just

Sixty seconds and an hour’s worth of

Faces have been seen.  Oh so easy

To impact others in a positive way

This teaches them and they will do

The same when given the chance

Happiness, glee, satisfaction from

The passing of thirst and hunger,

A pat on the back, taking time to

Teach or explain, running errands,

Transporting others when needed

Greeting and wishing well.  All of

These things and many more that

We will never know have been a

Help to the many who have seen

And observed.  Those unknown are

Probably the best.  I open my eyes

The visions stop; my mind at rest

I hear the humming or the earth

The singing of the birds and the

Whispering or the leaves.  All

Seems well, thinking another

Miracle.  They are there without

Our looking.  We have those moments

And just know someone is a work

TEN FOURS AND THE GRAND FOLKS

We have snowshoes

June doesn’t call for them

But then you never know

How far north you might go

We try to get closer

Than ever before to

Those that have gone on

To that distant shore

How many years older

At least fifty it seems

Back in your childhood

Now you have dreams

We could not sense their struggle

Always seemed like a holiday

Abstract existence in warped time

What words, if you could, would you say?

We could climb mountains

Or be willing to try

Just to get closer

For one more goodbye

Love cannot grasp it

That sense of belonging

No one let go

Yet there’s that longing

Magical times in young minds

Who thought it would always go on

Grandpa and grandma forever

But no it ended, they’re gone

The laughter and the nonsense

Oh!  To get it back

The power for a miracle

Is something that we lack

We wish there was a road there

All we had to do was drive

Start in reverse and travel real fast

To when they were still alive

No, the world turns

We’re left with a prayer and a hymn

And the truth is

We have become them

THE FRIEND I LONG FOR

Hello friend

You are the most

Intriguing person

I don’t even know

You hold some power

Over me, but I would

Love to get to know you

And develop a long term

Loving relationship

With you lasting

Year after year until

Death we do part

I think of candle light

Cognac and soft jazz music

Trips to St. Simon’s Island

And Santa Fe, New Mexico

How great!

We would hike

Mountain trails and explore

I can hear the laughter

And also the tears

Sense the joy of being

Along with the fears

Until one of us is left

Looking beautiful in black

Steeped in lovely grief

With no regrets for

Having lived the dream

EARLY TRADITIONS

Clouds ahead appeared as mountains

Above them were dark ominous floaters

Looking like large chunks of coal

About twenty miles further, rain drops

They were dancing on the windshield

Giving the feeling of a drum corps

Great excitement and then lightning

Followed by a gushing downpour

I set my imaginary batons down

Slowed and pulled my car over to

The side of the lightly traveled road

Rockets and blasts continued

This was an unknown holiday

Breath taken away, replaced by memories

I thought of lost friends; times that

Will never be enjoyed again

I was sad as I waited

My throat ached and eyes watered

Then it all stopped

Sunshine appeared and with it

Were countless rainbows

Spirits were lifted

Out to the right was a county cemetery

Many once lively people buried there

Real heroes in their own silent way

They took nothing for granted and endured

Veterans of hard work; survivors of

Difficult times and their children went on

And are no doubt buried somewhere new

Where they carried on the tradition

I thought about this as I continued my journey
