THE CREPE PAPER IS GREEN
Nothing felt right, but
it never does when
an element of reality
has been removed
from life. Our, one day
a year hero, Charlie,
no longer tickled the ivory at
The Shamrock Bar on
Franklin near Eastern.
A tradition was over.
Nothing tried would
replace it and so
we dealt with
a new void in life.
Finding a new spot
for Saint Patrick’s Day
celebration never worked.
The old gang
broke up, each
going their own way.
That was just life,
the way it still is.
Memory will serve
the lonely hearted
until something new
comes along or
the importance of
that special feeling
dwindles to nothingness.
Then we move on to
The Senior Center.
Do-gooders will come to
the home and lead
the inmates in some
tired old Irish tunes,
forgetting all about
the Guinness Stout and
we pretend to be happy
until they leave and we
wait for our daily ration
Of stool-softeners and
sleeping medications.
