WHAT ABOUT TODAY

WHAT ABOUT TODAY

The weather looked great.

Sunshine overwhelmed us.

Lake Michigan was calm.

Just a scant breeze.

No birds near the ground

But some were up in the sky.

I got out a rake and

Started to work. Give a

A fresh start to the lawn.

I worked for a while, then

Grabbed an edger and cut out a

Wheelbarrow of sod. It gave

A clean look to that area

Of the yard. There was a lot

More to do, and when I found

Possible help and asked for

Assistance, encouraging him

With my impression of the

Weather he said that maybe

Tomorrow would be better.

I looked at him and said

What about today. He just

Shook his head and walked away.

THE MEN IN WHITE

They don’t always wear white.

Sometimes, it is green or blue

Medical clothes that suit them.

They usually have prescription

Pads in their pockets and three

Or four pens in their breast pocket

Have to be ready is their motto.

Whatever you need, we will write

Out an order for. They will try to catch

You, noting that something doesn’t

Look right. They will assign you to

A waiting room, and you go in and

Wait. It seems like forever and

Finally, they come and find

Nothing wrong with you and

Wonder why you were told to

Wait. On the way out, you notice all

The specialties and wonder what

Some of them are about. Not about me

I hoped. They had me scheduled for

Two weeks from now to check on

One thing or another. I didn’t feel

Hopeless but was beginning to wonder.

Do they ever smile or wait until I

Leave and then laugh like hell.

WHAT THEY DO WHEN THEY DO NOTHING

Some like to prance around with

Their stethoscope around their

Neck and look sternly ahead,,

Until someone gives them recognition

I was directed to a room to wait

Finally, he came and knocked and

Then opened the door. “Arnold”, he asked

“No” I replied, but before I could explain

He shut the door. A minute later, he

Knocked and asked if my last name was

Haarman and I told him I was he and

Said my first name was Arnold, but I went

By my middle name, and everyone called

Me Steve. He asked me what he should

Call me, and after giving him a bewildered

Look, told him, Steve. I then asked him if I

Could call him Richard, and he said no

Call me Dr. Vermeulen. He said he wasn’t

A head above everybody, but that is what he

Liked to be called. So, I didn’t call him anything,

Not Mister, sir, or doctor. He said he didn’t know

What was wrong with me. Then said that I could

Come back in five or six weeks if I want and

That he knew how to do the billing. I just looked at

Him and then left.
