The doe, alone,
running full speed
across the road,
through the beam
of my headlights,
caught me
by surprise.
I braked and stopped,
expecting to see
a coyote or wolf
chasing its prey,
but, nothing,
just the now quiet
of the night,
giving me pause
to meditate,
as my heart
slowed its fluttering.
I wondered
about my demons
and whether
I would be able
to leave them behind,
outrunning them,
cleanly and swiftly,
or would they
catch up to me later
when the moon
was higher and brighter
on this slow moving night?
