ALONE AT THE OFFICE

I’m at work

At my plain air desk

Today it is in the landscape

At one of the Churches

Refreshing and trimming

Time is not a factor though

I know it is close to 3 o’clock

Yellow buses head to schools

I hear the engines and breathe the exhaust

My pile of clippings looks like a green igloo

Kids living in the neighborhood

Walk by singularly or grouped

Some have bags on their back

Others carry gadgets or phones

I say hello if I’m looking their way

They walk by with no reply

Eyes slightly glazed

How are you doing?

I say to

A group of three

They walk by with blank faces

I begin to think that

All these kids must be related

Finally an energetic fellow replies

Even asks how I am

He must be a new resident, I surmise

As I load the clippings

Into the back of my truck

Now it’s time for a nap
