DREARY EVENINGS

The evening hour has always been

A time of quiet peace

The work day is over

School and playtime finished

Then to relax before dinner

This time of year it is dark

The wind blowing and vicious

A good chance that people feel ornery

There are things to do but no energy

Dinner drags on and then the cleanup

There is no news to listen to

Most journalists have taken their final bow

All you hear is negative

There is no joy or motive to be happy

Exceptions are always existing

People of faith have someone to go to

He is a constant companion in their lives

The dreariness is less profound

There is even optimism

Some review the day’s accomplishments

They look forward for tomorrow

There is excitement as they ponder

These dark days and evenings will pass

There is always a silver lining

It is an ill wind that brings no good

The lagers are eager to find fault

Excuses are not hard to come by

Failure is recognized as there is always tomorrow

But the world keeps turning

We must keep pace; keep taking the steps

What drives one and not the other?

A question as old as mankind

We are free to choose our path

Some are bound to fail

They took the wrong path or didn’t care

Normally someone will bail them out

They will get by, usually on someone else’s dime

Maybe things will change

Energy and motivation will return

The evenings will be lighter and merrier

That’s all we can hope for
