I told you so! The words are not spoken, but heard anyway
Emotional retrofits, old people’s admonishments, after the fact
Their Monday morning hindsight was predictable
Muddy Waters had a clearer vision, when you cared
to listen to the words he actually said,
as he sang his jazz-soul–blues
Oh well! Second guessing is nothing new; not to this crowd
I’ve been hearing it all my life. It must be effective,
I thought as my head was nodding up and down
An act so mechanical that it almost made me seem like
a wind-up toy, waiting to have the stem pulled out and
then pushed back in, as the response looked for
came to them so automatically
it’s all so easy, just follow their lead.
Everything will be okay tomorrow
Oh, so sterile, when just a little love would do
I can only care for you, my love, he would sing in his Muddy way,
but yet so clear to me and my tears would water up and cleanse my soul
and I would and still know that this love can do more than all the looks of scorn
So easy too, to reach out and say I love you and keep doing
the good things, you do, while being careful
We are with you, just do, do, do and
know our love is there for you, you, and you
Stay close so we can touch, touch,
touch you with our love, love, love
You may be out of reach, but we will feel you
and we can only care for you forever more
and I shiver as the warmth and love envelopes me
